Job Description

As a Public and Green Space Operator, your primary responsibility is to provide cleansing and grounds maintenance services to keep our city looking its best.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Grounds Maintenance:

    Perform grounds maintenance tasks, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, shrub bed maintenance (pruning), and weed spraying using various equipment. Remove graffiti using chemicals or powered equipment. Conduct mechanical sweeping. Maintain outdoor sports facilities, sports pitches, and tennis courts. Address litter removal, emptying bins, and cleaning public toilets as required.

  2. Issue Resolution:

    Respond to and resolve day-to-day issues. Report any significant issues to the Public and Green Space Team Leader.

  3. Reporting and Public Engagement:

    Report issues that affect the public realm’s appearance and feel, such as damaged streetscape, fly-tipping, dog-related issues, littering, and more. Inform and assist the public and businesses with their questions and complaints.

  4. Training and Performance:

    Participate in safety training for equipment operation and work practices. Ensure consistently high performance.

  5. Innovation and Safety:

    Contribute to idea exchange and participate in future improvement initiatives. Perform work in a safe and effective manner, following City Council policies and procedures.

  6. Efficient Workflow:

    Utilise IT solutions for mobile working and efficient response to service demands.

  7. Documentation:

    Maintain basic records, including play equipment checks and timesheets.

  8. Flexibility:

    Be flexible with working hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed to meet service demands.

  9. Team Support:

    Collaborate across the Public Realm service to provide support as necessary.

  10. Other Duties:

    Perform any other duties relevant to the role and grading, as deemed appropriate.

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • Essential:

    • General education to GCSE standard in two suitable subjects (Maths and English preferred).
    • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and requirements.
    • Possession of a valid driving license.
    • Understanding of legislation enforcement.
  • Desirable:

    • Evidence of training in areas such as weed spraying or the use of mechanical equipment.
    • Experience in operating cleansing or grounds maintenance equipment.
    • Experience in implementing and maintaining safe systems of work.
    • Willingness to work outside of regular working hours when necessary.
